DescriptionSuper Mutt 1 year 10 months Male
This is Barney our beautiful Romanian rescue, we are sadly looking to rehome him as we have worked with him for a year now trying to integrate him into our life, but it seems like he would do much better with more stability and routine than we are able to provide for him right now.
He's a very special boy, he's very smart and picks up tricks and training quickly. We love to do scent work together, and he is so good at tricks, he knows sit, down, up, off, spins, weaves, place etc and he would do anything for a bit of chicken! We have worked on his threshold/door manners, but needs consistency with new guardians keeping up with it.
He has so much potential and when we see him at his happiest it's so obvious that he is such a great dog, he is so silly and funny and honestly makes your heart swell with joy, we need to find him a better situation that means he can thrive and be that happy free dog we know he is and deserves to be.
We suspect Barney is in pain in his back legs/lower back and are in the process of getting scans to hopefully get some answers, suspected tissue or nerve damage. As a result Barney is reactive and the further his pain has progressed the more reactive he has become, when we first rescued him he was very quiet and quick to learn but due to this pain and reactivity he struggles to engage.
We expect to sort his scans out whilst he is in our care still, but we don't have the right environment for him to recover from any surgery if he needed it, so new guardians will have to explore that.
He doesn't like being handled and has snapped at us for doing so to his legs/feet (especially at vets, they won't be able to touch him) but will happily come for a fuss when he feels safe with you (expect this to take a WHILE, it took him about 6 months to let us fuss him and only now after a year does he seek out fuss very occasionally.)
He is dog reactive (some dogs are fine), can lunge at cars and bikes and has guarding intincts around his home (ie he wont be a fan of the postie) His bark is very loud as he is mostly chihuahua so he makes an excellent guard dog and has kept us safe since we took him in.
Expect to spend a lot of time managing his interactions, he needs to be removed from his triggers for a while to allow him to settle and recover before you can begin desensitisation again, so please don't apply if you live in a built up area around lots of dogs or cars.
We wouldn't feel comfortable rehoming him to a home with kids as he has very tight boundaries for himself and doesn't quite respect people's boundaries (he climbs up/ paws at you if he has unmet needs)
He has lived and spent some time with other dogs (girls and neutered boys) and does enjoy it, but he does need a lot of time and energy invested into his training so would probably do well as an only dog still.
We would love to find the best guardians for Barney, his new guardians will need to; be patient and considerate of his behaviour and practise R+ training ONLY to improve his reactivity, be willing to continue his vet process to find his source of pain and make it better if possible, continue his training (settle mat, scent work, muzzle training, conditioning)
We know him inside and out and have dealt with all of his different behaviours. We know a lot about training and behaviour rehabilitation so are very happy to give all of the advice we can.
We would love to still be included in his life and would love regular contact with you on the phone about how he is getting on/ if there are any issues and we can laugh and cry about him.
We have invested so much time and money into him and you will get everything we have including all of our knowledge. We live in a van so may be able to travel to, or closer to potential guardians!
If you have read all of this and believe that you could give Barney the best home possible then please get in touch. Thank you!
