Astro is a beautiful young boy looking for his new home! He is fantastic with every dog he meets, and he’s very affectionate with his humans too. Astro would be best living with another dog/s.
The ideal home for Astro will have:
- a robust and playful dog(s)
- a safe space/room in the house which has easy access to the outdoors and no pressure to venture further into the house from there (i.e. a conservatory or large crate in a kitchen)
- secure garden or willingness to have him on a long line initially (he can jump 5ft fencing but once he knows you/the family he doesn't bother)
- ability to walk him in quiet areas with NO/LOW traffic, he is very scared of big lorries/trucks/lots of traffic - the odd car is fine or very slow cars, but busy roads are too much at this stage
- ideally he will not need to travel by car for the first few weeks whilst you build a bond with him, as he finds this very scary
- he can be left alone and settles well, especially if given chews and toys (he can be a bit destructive if bored, so needs to be given things to safely destroy)
- if there are small furries or other pets in the home they will need to be kept secure, as he does enjoy chasing small fluffy things
Astro loves to train and play. Once he's confident with you he can be a very typical adolescent. He can mouth and jump up, so needs an understanding owner who is willing to use positive reinforcement and calm training to help him learn appropriate social skills. He is very clever so makes progress quickly, but patience and understanding is needed - as with any adolescent dog.
There are a few things that Astro finds scary - traffic, travelling in the car, and being inside the house, other than in his safe space. With the house he is bravely exploring by himself, but relies on having a safe room that is his. What Astro LOVES is dogs, people friends and walks.
If you are looking to help a dog learn that the human world isn't that scary, you have patience and time to let Astro take things at his own pace - then he will be an amazing addition to your family.
