DescriptionMax is a Springer Spaniel crossed with a Wheaton Terrier or as I prefer; a "Swinger". He is 5 months old, and for such a young chap he is a really good boy. He is mostly black, with the exception of a white goatee, a little white stripe on his head, and white tips to his paws and tail. He is a gorgeous and exceptionally cute dog to watch and play with.
Through no fault of his own though we are looking to rehome him and were the situation different we certainly would not consider it. Despite training and all the efforts of integrating them, our cats have unfortunately not taken to young Max and months later they're still petrified with the exception of our old lady cat whom we thought would have the most problems but who put him in his place and will now reluctantly negotiate her way past him. Unfortunately, no amount of Dreamies is solving the issue and we're having to consider this option. We have done alot of work to stop him chasing them and for the majority of the time wont and instead go prone and submissive as he has been trained to do around cats, but he is desperate for their company and therein lies the problem.
Though his intensity is lessened by the Wheaton in him, it can be decieving and Max is still very much a Springer at heart, a gun dog, and a pack animal. He craves the company of our cats. He seeks out other dogs on walks, we believe he would be much happier in a family which has another dog, who can play with him and he can learn from, or an owner who has lots of time for him and could put him to work, perhaps on a small-holding, as he requires mental and physical stimulation. I've been told he is not quite as energetic as other springers and is surprisingly calm for a puppy the majority of time, but he really does need someone that understands the needs of a springer cross. He will make somebody an excellent companion given time.
We have taken him to gun dog training and have worked on his recall and he is really good responding to a whistle. Although he enjoys the odd games of fetch, Max would much rather go about sniffing and bounding his way around an open field in the long grass and enjoying the company of other play mates. He has taken to command training and responds well. In his repertoire of tricks already are the commands "Sit", "Down", "Up", "Leave", "Come", "Touch", "Paw", "Turn-Around", "High-Five", "Stop" and also responds well to "Wait" and "Stay" so long as you're not too far away or out of eyeshot for too long. Finally, walking to "Heel" is still a work in progress - the Springer in him was born to lead! Inside the home he will "Drop" his toy, but outside if it's yummy squelchy grassy clump of mud be prepared to get your hand in his mouth; according to him it's the tastiest thing in the world! These commands are also associated with hand-gestures which he recognises and will obey. Bare in mind he's only five months old, he is a very clever boy, and if you're interested, we can provide video's of his skill.
He is toilet trained, happy in his crate over night, and for naps during the day, and will often take himself there when he is tired. We have managed to get him to stop biting and he has not destroyed any of our furniture. He is in the middle of teething, and has so far been happy using chew toys to manage the need to bite.
Should you require it, we can provide his crate and mattress, his toys, leads, harnesses and food etc.
Please get in touch if you think you can offer him a good home, he really deserves a loving family. Best Boy!
