Trasto means junk in Spanish, a reminder that dogs are often not at all valued in Spain. Trasto was given to a hunter as a puppy. The hunter didn’t want him and told another hunter friend that he would take Trasto hunting one day with the rest of his dogs and try to get rid of him. This is a common way of getting rid of unwanted dogs in Spain, ‘losing’ them somewhere in the countryside in hope nobody will find them or shooting them. Since Trasto wasn’t a hunting dog, he was useless to his owner and costing him money to feed. Thankfully his friend didn’t want to see Trasto be killed so he took Trasto with the hope of finding somebody to take care of him. He didn’t manage to find him somewhere safe himself so asked the shelter we work with to help him since he’d previously given his own hunting dogs to them.
Trasto has been deprived on any affection or love in his life which is very clear. It seems like he has been beaten because he runs away from people he doesn’t know, cowering and trying to avoid them. Once he trusts you, he is the most faithful, noble and affectionate dog in the world and becomes a cuddle monster. Once he creates a bond with people, they are friends for life, he just loves being with them and it’s heartwarming to see compared to the scared little soul that arrived at the shelter who wouldn’t let anybody get close.
He is quite small in size, weighing 12kg and is very calm for his age, choosing to spend more time relaxing and sunbathing than running around with the other dogs. He likes other dogs and his ideal home would be one with a resident dog as he takes a lot of confidence from being around others and following their lead. He sleeps next to them and walks by their side, he loves their company and even when humans are too scary, he is reassured by a canine buddy. He could live with any resident dog, from old to young, as he reads other dogs very well and adapts to them and matches their energy wonderfully.
He likes going for walks, although would do best in a home with quiet walks to let him get to know new places, sounds and sights at his own pace. He enjoys exploring and is very happy to be out but could still be easily spooked in a busy place. Unlike most of our dogs, he doesn’t have any hunting instinct so would be an ideal companion for any quiet home that can offer him a cosy safe space on the sofa.
