Description

Chow Chows were originally used for guarding, herding and hunting. They first came over to Britain in the 18th Century.  Whilst they may look like cute teddy bears, they have very strong natural guarding and territorial tendencies.  They are loyal and devoted to their owner, but they are also strong-willed, assertive, independent and intelligent.  They can be reserved and aloof and suspicious of strangers.  As they were originally bred for hunting, they have a strong prey drive, so no cats/small furries!  Training a Chow Chow required knowledge, understanding, patience and perseverance. Douglas is looking for a new family that has owned Chow Chows or has sound experience and knowledge of this unique breed. He’d love for someone to be around most of the day and has plenty of free time to spend with him and a secure garden for him to play in. He could live with teenage children that are experienced with large breed dogs and could potentially live with a compatible, tolerant and confident adult female dog(s). Douglas has been hand-reared and once he’s in his new home will need to attend puppy training classes.  His new family must be committed to his training, which needs to be consistent, regular and reward based.  His very thick coat means he can tolerate cold temperatures, but struggles in the heat and will need to be kept cool in warm weather, ideally indoors, and not exercised when it is hot.  He will also require regular grooming.
