Axel is fostered in Leamington Warwickshire
Axel is a medium sized crossbreed aged eighteen months old.
We rescued Axel and his mother and five siblings during a trip to Crivatu in Romania when he was just a few weeks old. We found them behind a derelict house. One by one we tempted the pups out of the undergrowth and took them all to a safe private shelter. His mother was brought to the UK and successfully adopted not long after. One by one the pups got adopted in Germany but Axel was the shyest and didn’t get a home offer. Eventually we brought Axel over a few weeks ago and he has been in a UK foster home for a while.
This sweet little boy Axel is a gentle soul looking for a friendly home. He has come on leaps and bounds since he arrived gaining confidence daily.
He is still at the beginning of his journey and will need a patient adopter to help him build his confidence.
Axel loves his comfort - he likes his big bed and being on a nice fluffy comfy blanket. He accepts gentle stroking and affection but is cautious in approaching you. He has started giving out kisses in his foster home - licking my arms and hands to show his affection. He likes having a few toys and chew sticks to entertain him.
He loves his food and eats well. He has also done really well in terms of toilet training and on prompts uses the garden and training pads overnight.
Axel has started to play and mix with the dogs he is fostered with. He joins in on the periphery with play and shares his bed with the other dogs happily. He would be happy as an only dog or with the company of another dog for companionship and play, and potential to help with his confidence.
He is gaining confidence on his walks and enjoys short walks that are not over-whelming. With time he will need more exercise and will enjoy them more as he gains confidence.
This is a gentle and sweet little boy who wants to do well. He needs patience and kindness to show him it's all ok. He has lovely soulful eyes and it's wonderful seeing him gain confidence. Someone will be very lucky to give him this chance.
I think he'd be ok with respectful children aged ten plus. He's ok when you leave him. He would be fine on his own or with other dogs. He likes all mine including lively Cuba and is starting to join in in the more gentle play. He will stand up for himself if it gets too much - when Cuba mouths his legs axel tells him no!
When you adopt a Safe Rescue dog, you MUST use a slip lead. This will keep your dog safe: your new dog will be nervous and will not trust you, and you will not know which situations might upset your dog. If your dog panics, then a slip lead is the only way to prevent your dog from escaping (many dogs can escape from a collar and/or harness).
It will take AT LEAST 3-6 months for your dog to settle-in and for you to know your dog fully (longer for nervous dogs). The slip lead must ALWAYS be used during this settling-in period.
Even after your dog is settled, it is safest to use the slip lead in situations where your dog may become scared (e.g. visiting new places, around unfamiliar people, at the vet), and it situations where unexpected triggers might happen (e.g. around bonfire night). Nervous dogs may always need to wear a slip-lead as a back-up safety measure.
The slip lead is a safety device and must NEVER be used as a training tool. Using the lead to apply pressure to the dog’s neck is damaging. If your dog pulls on the lead, then we can advise you on training methods that avoid harm.
Once your dog is settled, you may want to consider using a harness (together with the slip lead) if your dog is comfortable with being handled when it is fitted. Most harnesses are not escape-proof, but harnesses with a strap behind the ribcage (e.g. Ruffwear Webmaster or Perfect Fit Harnesses) are safer.
Retractable / extendable leads must never be used on our dogs.
Adopted dogs must be collected from the rescue and transported straight home in a crate.
Fences and gates must be 5foot minimum in height and secure.
