I rescued this little toy poodle sized girl from an isolated area where she had no food or water. She was sitting in the middle of a road on a corner at risk of being run over & so palpably sad. She was a stricken & pathetic looking sight. The poor lass had no company & just appeared resigned & without hope. When I stopped she looked curious and desperate and when I reached down to stroke her, her whole body language screamed ‘I want your acceptance & help but please don’t hurt me’. She was submissive, defenceless, vulnerable & affectionate. With her tail wedged between her legs as far as it would go (while wagging) and that half crescent shape dogs employ to ingratiate themselves, made my heart fracture. Rather than feed her I did something more fruitful - I picked her up and took her with me. She had never met me and
yet she let me pick her up and bundle her into the front seat of my van. Once ensconced inside Shemi was warm - outside it was -14c so I think she felt a sense of salvation. Despite never being loved, homeless in that area for a long time I heard & being recycled through a municipality system (apparently) as though she was waste paper, Shemi still walks on a lead like she was at crufts (no training). This regal looking animal let me touch her bowl while eating (ravenous) & responded to what I needed from her despite her confusion & fear. The fearfulness in her eyes as to what might be coming was hard to see. At one point she came over to me for safety around the other dogs (daunting when it’s all so new) & that kind of desperate bonding so quickly & frantically really brings tears to your eyes.
This gal is beautiful & has a look of royal blood- just something so aristocratic in her pictures - an arresting looking animal with a stately & photogenic air. Her diminutive size, affectionate ways, age & nature make her an ideal companion for the right home.
