DescriptionSkye is a gorgeous, intelligent four year old pure bred German Shepherd. She is entire, chipped, vaccinated and ready to find a new home.
Skye has a very loving, loyal temperament. She loves chasing balls, sticks, swimming and beach trips . She is 99% of the time as loyal as they come, she will be by your side day and night for companionship and of course cuddles and much needed belly rubs. If you go out in a group, and separate, she will try and herd everyone back together. She loves going out to shows, for walks and family gatherings, to be honest she just loves to be wherever you are. She is very good in the car but will bark if she sees a cat! Skye knows basic verbal commands such as sit, down, off, touch, wait, go back, heal, side, dead, bring, yes, no. She also responds extremely well to hand commands such as touch, sit and down (we can show you these). Recall can either be done verbally or via a beep, the beep noise if most effective for that other 1% of times.
Skye lives for her walks and knows the time of day better than you will yourself. She is a creature of habit and finds it very difficult when things change. She is house trained and can last from 9 till 7 without going to the bathroom. If needed she will ask to go out, if you're asleep and she needs to go out, again she will wake and ask you. If you have children in the house and they are crying and you haven’t noticed, she will come and cry to get your attention to alert that something is wrong. A large fenced-in garden is key, she loves to spend all day outside, either sunning herself or watching birds etc.
Like most German Shepherds, Skye can be a cheeky monkey, give her an inch she will take a mile… you will need to be more stubborn than what she is. If you let her pull on the lead it will take you days for her to walk on heal again. You let her run out for 50 meters, she will try 60. Our best piece of advice, stand your ground! She will be a much better dog for it.
Skye walks with a collar and lead. When out on walks in a field or road she gets over excited when coming across other dogs and barks, this sounds far more scary than she realises and as a result we find it best to keep walking. If however, a dog you meet barks back, she will not like it and will get her angry bark on, therefore it is best just to walk on and not interact. However, when out at shows or country fairs where you are surrounded by other dogs and humans you will find she will not bat an eyelid.
Skye needs a home with owners who ideally work at home to keep her company and have the space for her to enjoy a good ball throw and of course have a passion for walking. She enjoys spending the majority of her day sleeping and will become your shadow as your move about the house / grounds. If you sit on a chair or sofa with one leg crossed on top of the other she will move in front of you, for you to use your foot, (the one that is sticking out) to rub under her belly.
Skye needs a home where she can be kept physically and mentally stimulated, ideally where owners can keep to a routine for walks and feeding times otherwise she will become restless and then play up. We find a box of toys helps for during the day; when excitable she will go and grab you one to play with.
Skye can be left anything up to 6 hours and is used to sleeping on the bedroom floor with us at night (bad routine sorry, she just loves the company!)
Skye is the most adorable and one of the most gentle dogs we have ever come across with children, having lived her life with babies, toddlers, teenagers in fact humans of all ages. She has so much love to give and loves spending time with humans.
There have been two occasions where she has felt the need to protect ‘our family’ and she has then growled at distant family members to make them back away.
Please note Skye is suited only to a structured home, to live alone, without other cats or dogs.
The reason for rehoming: Our dogs had a nasty fight where one needed a big eye operation. Our garden is not secure enough and when Skye gets the opportunity she runs off, aside from attacking our other dog she has now chased after three other dogs in our village and two cats, meaning she can no longer go on walks without a lead. Being transparent she has previously growled at two of our distant relatives, although my partner and I are conflicting on whether or not this would happen again to another human, but wanted to make you aware.
Diet: Raw food, fed twice a day. You will need to stay with her whilst she eats or she wont eat.
Walks: On a lead
Can live with children: Yes - used to newborns, toddlers and teenagers
Can live with dogs: No - Must be the only pet
Can live with cats: No - Must be the only pet
We would be looking to meet her new owners by going on a couple of walks so you can be confident that you all get on.
