Description
Monty – 12-Month-Old Newfoundland
Fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult family home with other dogs.
Monty is a stunning young Newfoundland who recently came into our care after his previous owners found him too much to handle.
As he grew into a strong, powerful dog, they struggled with walks, particularly when he wanted to greet other dogs without training and proper guidance Monty became too much for them.
He was so nervous that first day

Monty’s Progress in Foster Care
When Monty first arrived, he was terrified of the resident dogs, barking and trying to escape.
Watching a dog of his size feel so overwhelmed and frightened was heartbreaking, especially when he had only just celebrated his first birthday. Even getting him into a car took an hour of patient coaxing. When meeting new people, he was a mix of barking, wagging his tail, and nervous energy.

In the Home
Monty has settled well with his foster family and loves to play. He has a cheeky side, often running off with clothes and offering his paw for attention.
He sleeps loose in the kitchen/lounge with the other dogs and has been perfectly clean in the house.
With Other Dogs
Monty’s biggest challenge has been learning how to interact with other dogs properly. At first, he was fearful and unsure how to play. With patience and guidance, he has made huge progress.
This was him in the beginning when he was not sure about playing with Lucy and nervous

He has learned from the resident dogs, getting used to playing appropriately and understanding social cues.
His confidence has blossomed, and he enjoys running and playing with his foster sister.

What Monty Needs in a Home
Monty is a big, loving boy who has come so far, but he still needs the right home to continue his journey. We are very specific about his needs because we want him to flourish and ensure he never becomes a ‘problem dog’ due to fear or lack of guidance. His new home must:
Have experience with large breeds, preferably Newfoundlands, and understand the commitment involved, including coat care, slobber, and muddy paws!
Be confident and experienced with training—he needs continued structured learning, including attending dog training classes to help him build confidence and social skills. He is a very sensitive dog but does requires firm and clear guidance but this must given with kindness and reward.
Have at least one other dog—Monty has thrived with his foster family’s dogs, and this has been key to his progress. Ideally, a friendly, confident female dog would be best, as he is still entire and too young to be neutered.
Live in a rural or semi-rural environment—Monty loves his off-lead time and would not suit a town setting.
Be willing to let him off-lead in safe spaces—freedom and exercise are essential for his well-being.
He has been well cared for, with regular vet visits in his previous home.
If you’ve read everything and believe you’re the right match for Monty, we would love to hear from you!
