Description

Beautiful 2.5 year old dark brindle female whippet x greyhound requires loving home. Poppy is our rescue dog who we brought home 6 months ago as a buddy for our younger whippet. Unfortunately, our younger whippet has not adapted to having another dog in the home. Poppy is much larger than our younger dog and wants to be Alpha female and pack leader. She can be boisterous with our other dog and first in everything, including his toys, treats, space he occupies and attention. He does not cope with this and has caused him to become very vocal, anxious and withdrawn. We got the help of a qualified, experienced animal behaviourist and trainer early on to assess the dynamics between the two dogs. The behaviourist after assessing both our dogs together in the home and outdoors, felt that Poppy would best be suited as an only dog in the household. She wants to be in charge and would struggle with other dogs she lived with as this could cause conflict with who was the leader of the pack. Poppy is an extremely loving and affectionate companion. She spends most of her time as a couch potato, typical of her breed mix. She loves blankets and being warm and cosy and if she can be curled up next to you, even better. She’s obedient and loves to please. She has good recall and is excellent on the lead. She loves going to agility type venues with things to run/walk on or just open space to run. She loves the beach and water and countryside. She has been used to being around horses and going out on hacks. One of her favourite things to play with is her tennis ball. She is able to be left alone but we don’t leave either of our dogs for more than a couple of hours. She is excellent in the car and travels well. She is house trained. She is also very happy for you to groom or trim her nails. She can be wary of strangers and prefers not to be touched by people she doesn’t know until she is ready and sure they are ok. She sleeps all night and sleeps in her bed. **PLEASE NOTE** Poppy need to go to a home with NO CATS and NO CHILDREN. When Poppy came to us we were told she was ok with cats. We have two house cats and she will sometimes chase them. Because her breed mix can have a high prey drive, I would not recommend her to go to a home with cats, to be on the safe side. She had not been used to children so we do not know what she would be like with children. Poppy would suit living with someone or a couple who are retired/work part time or from home. Because she is good on the lead, we feel she would also suit someone older as she is very manageable on the lead. We are very sad to have to let Poppy go but we have to do what’s best for both her and our younger dog. The behaviourist we saw explained that sometimes some dogs do not pair well due to their personalities and despite our best efforts, we have to accept that Poppy needs to be in a home where there is no competition for her and our younger dog, needs to be relaxed again and not stressed. If you are interested please get in touch and we can give you more information and get to know more about you.
