Monty – 12-Month-Old Newfoundland
Fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult family home with other dogs.
Monty is a stunning young Newfoundland who recently came into our care after his previous owners found him too much to handle. As he grew into a strong, powerful dog, they struggled with walks, particularly when he wanted to greet other dogs.
His size and bouncy nature also became challenging when grandchildren visited, and his barking made guests nervous, leading to him being shut away.
His previous owners loved him and took good care of him, but without the right training and socialization from a young age, Monty became anxious and unsure about the world.
We also know he was attacked as a young puppy in an unprovoked incident, which had a lasting impact on his confidence.
Despite his size, Monty is still very much a puppy at heart, and many of his behaviors stem from fear rather than defiance.
When unsure, he barks—a deep, booming sound that can be intimidating to others but likely startles him just as much.
Instead of working through these issues, his previous home avoided situations that made him nervous, which only reinforced his fears.

Monty’s Progress in Foster Care
When Monty first arrived, he was terrified of the resident dogs, barking and trying to escape.
Watching a dog of his size feel so overwhelmed and frightened was heartbreaking, especially when he had only just celebrated his first birthday.
Even getting him into a car took an hour of patient coaxing. When meeting new people, he was a mix of barking, wagging his tail, and nervous energy.

However, Monty was still young and adaptable, and with the right guidance, he has made incredible progress.
Watching him come out of his shell has been amazing, and while it has required effort, he has learned faster than we expected.
In the Home
Monty has settled well with his foster family and loves to play. He has a cheeky side, often running off with clothes and offering his paw for attention.
He sleeps loose in the kitchen/lounge with the other dogs and has been perfectly clean in the house.
He hasn’t been destructive, though when left alone at night, he is secured in the utility room with a stairgate, where he settles quietly during the day if left.
When visitors arrive, he may bark initially out of nerves but settles quickly. We are actively working on this.
With Other Dogs
Monty’s biggest challenge has been learning how to interact with other dogs properly. At first, he was fearful and unsure how to play. With patience and guidance, he has made huge progress.

He has learned from the resident dogs, getting used to playing appropriately and understanding social cues.
His confidence has blossomed, and he enjoys running and playing with his foster sister.

What Monty Needs in a Home
Monty is a big, loving boy who has
Have experience with large breeds, preferably Newfoundlands.
Be confident and experienced with training.
Have at least one other dog—Monty has thrived with his foster family’s dogs, and this has been key to his progress. Ideally, a friendly, confident female dog would be best, as he is still entire and too young to be neutered.
