Description
Handsome Oscar is a 19 month old chemically neutered Malinois, Caucasian Shepherd, GSD Cross with a lean build and striking brindle coat. He gets admired wherever he goes - however we think it is fair to say that Oscar is a work in progress!
Oscar is wonderfully behaved in the home, where he is calm, toilet trained, non-destructive and has no issues over food or toy protection. He loves his humans and is dog friendly. He sleeps all night and chills out on the sofa in the day with lots of cuddles.
Oscar is an athletic, energetic dog, who loves to have a run, so a large, enclosed garden, is a must. He is by nature alert and boundary protective and will let you know if you have visitors. Oscar has only lived in quiet places with little neighbourhood activity, hence he is noise sensitive and reacts to sounds outside the property perimeter both during the day and night, therefore an ideal home will be as quiet a location as possible. He will require a garden that does not run alongside a road as he chases cars up and down the boundary.
He is a country boy whose favourite place is open fields, where he loves to sniff, dig and explore. He is strong on the lead, but with the right handler can walk like a trained soldier. He has started recall training which is essential, and with work Oscar will be an ideal long walk companion. He is excellent in the car and often likes to have a sleep on the back seat, even when the car is stationary on the drive.!
Although he is good with children, his enthusiasm and energetic nature means an adult home would be preferred.
Oscar is still young and gets excited, so he will need an experienced owner who he can look up to and who can give him ongoing obedience training. Oscar has a history of leash pulling with his owners, but walking nicely for other people. He can also be stubborn and not obey commands, so he will need firm handling and ongoing training. He responds well to strong male figures.
We are sure that Oscar will be an awesome pet and/or working dog. He is an ideal property guardian and has potential for other kinds of work including scenting.
He would most likely thrive in the company of another dog who he can play with, he gets on especially well with older females. He is attracted to most dogs and wants to play, he interacts well but gets overexcited and can dominate weaker, smaller dogs. He is fine with dogs of both sexes, and lets dogs snap at him when he crosses boundaries. He has even been nipped a few times, but does not react. He will however respond to hostile males, he has a dislike for black Labs, Border Collies and small Bulldog type dogs.
Oscar has never been left alone since he has been in foster care and so there is a potential that he may suffer from some separation anxiety initially. However with careful management and lots of love, patience and reassurance this we are sure would just be a transitional issue- if an issue at all.
If you are an experienced large breed owner/handler who would be committed to helping Oscar become the fantastic dog we know he could be please consider taking him on what would be an incredible joint journey with unbelievable satisfaction and reward.
