Description

Ziggy Peaches, our 2 year old liver and white Sprocker, has given birth to four beautiful pups in her first litter, on 13th Nov. šŸ©· Chocolate girl ā€˜Choccyā€™ šŸ’™ Liver & white boy ā€˜Chunkā€™ šŸ’™ Chocolate boy ā€˜Pabloā€™ šŸ©· Liver & white girl ā€˜Pom Pomā€™ As of today, 16th Dec, there are 2 pups remaining, the liver and white girl called Pom Pom and the liver and white boy called Chunk. They have really lovely personalities with the nicest markings to match! Pom Pom has a brown spot on the top of her head. She is also the most cuddly and gets caught in the crossfire when her siblings are play fighting. Sheā€™s definitely the delicate, dainty one. Chunk is the cheeky chappy who lies under the sofa and pounces at you when you walk past šŸ˜‚ heā€™s so playful but equally loves his cuddles and ear strokes. The chocolates are adorable too, although noticeably more feral šŸ¤£ however they are sold. Iā€™m understandably biased, but they couldnā€™t be loved any more than they are. They are all pure perfection and literally brighten our days, like little rays of sunshine ā˜€ļøšŸ˜ At 4.5 weeks old, they still sleep quite a lot, however they have lots of active periods now and are quite frankly starting to be excitable little tinkers, as you would hope šŸ˜ Being a very busy household with children, as well as a cavapoo called Ozzy, and a cat called Ludo, means these pups will be very well socialised and used to every household noise you could think of šŸ˜† 4 weeks to 12 weeks of age is the crucial stage for socialisation so we are making sure they explore all areas of the house, no where is out of bounds. They follow us into the toilet, hear it flush. They follow us to the front door when we get a parcel and hear strangers voices. They have started going into the garden this week, and we make sure they go outside after eating and when theyā€™ve woken up with the command ā€œwee weeā€ and ā€œpoo pooā€ and we are actively praising them and reinforcing the appropriate cue each time as necessary. Itā€™s only been 2 days and we have a really high success rate for toileting outside. The whelping box is in our gym off the main family room, which is where they sleep every night with Mum, however during the day, they roam free and usually choose to nap in their bed in the kitchen/family room or on blankets next to the sofa. With myself only working a few hours a week, Iā€™m predominantly home with them, however if Iā€™m out for an hour to the supermarket, doing school runs and running errands etc, I put them in their whelping box in the gym, so they are used to being left for short periods. Itā€™s so important to expose them to as many noises. textures, experiences and people as possible. So they will be having their first car journey this week, and weekly ones after that. Weā€™ll open the window slightly so they can hear cars, motorbikes etc. All sounds that are very normal but the sooner they are exposed to them, the better. We have lots of sensory objects out for them to explore. Wrapping paper is currently a firm favourite, as is the Christmas tree! I almost laugh writing this and my husband thinks Iā€™ve lost the plot, but normalising every day activities is crucial. I dried my hair in the kitchen yesterday morning just so itā€™s another sound they hear early on. I have conducted so much research into having these puppies to ensure they are 1st class pets. The money is clearly a plus point from selling them, no-one can deny that, but the experience so far has just been incredible and everything Iā€™d hoped for. Having been victims of purchasing a cockapoo puppy (unknowingly) from a puppy farm a few years ago, I always said if we had puppies, I would ensure they were the best pets you could wish for. The reason being that we sadly had to rehome our cockapoo to a family with no children. This was clearly a very heartbreaking time and I wouldnā€™t wish that on any family. We consequently took a lot of time researching breeds and breeders before buying Ziggy. The same goes for the stud dog, Mr Bean, who is the pups Daddy. His owner works in a vetā€™s and is very experienced and knowledgeable. Sheā€™s always been on hand if I have any questions and we keep in touch often. As soon as Ziggy went into labour, we FaceTimed and watched the pups being born together šŸ„° Bean is a working Sprocker who is already competing and winning alongside the best working dogs out there. Iā€™ve uploaded a picture of him with Ziggy and another of him with one of his latest medals on the pre-novice test which now means he is a clever boy at novice level. Like Ziggy, he is also 2 years old and heā€™s been health tested with great scoring!h Ziggyā€™s pregnancy and labour was textbook too, along with feeding. No interventions were required in any aspect which is perfect. They all came out breathing, and all started feeding within minutes. The pups are still feeding off mum due to their age but weaning commenced a week ago at almost 4 weeks old. They are being fed ā€˜Pooch & Muttā€™ puppy food which we buy from Pets at Home but Iā€™m sure is available in many places. Itā€™s the chicken and superfoods flavour which is grain free and includes prebiotics for digestion. The pups have been wormed and fleaā€™d twice to date, they weighed 2kg on Friday and therefore had 2ml of Drontal. The flea treatment we use is suitable for small pups, itā€™s the Frontline spray. They will all leave with their own blanket with Mumā€™s scent and will be vet checked, microchipped and had their first vaccination. A Ā£250 non refundable deposit will reserve your pup. Please send me a message if you would like to come and meet the pups. If you decide to purchase one, you will receive regular updates inc photos and videos and are welcome to come back weekly if you wish. The pups are ready to leave on the 8th Jan but I would like them to be collected from the 9th Jan and onwards as my daughterā€™s birthday is the 8th and sheā€™d be distraught about them going on her special day šŸ˜” Speak soon, Jen

Buyer's checklist for dogs and puppies

Be responsible, do your research!

Be responsible, do your research!

Rehoming a puppy is a massive commitment and different breeds have vastly different characteristics. For more info read our breed profiles. Make sure that you have researched the breed fully and ensured that it's the right breed for you, and your family. Our friends at PAAG have put together some great advice on how to buy a pet. Also ensure that the seller or breeder is genuine and ask alot of questions. A good breeder will help you choose a puppy whose temperament will suit your lifestyle and family circumstances, and wonā€™t rush you into making a decision. Here are the most important questions to ask the breeder before viewing a puppy.

Puppies must be viewed with their mother in the seller's home!

Puppies must be viewed with their mother in the seller's home!

Always view the puppy at the sellerā€™s home with the puppyā€™s mother. Do not accept any excuses for sending money without a viewing having taken place, or if the advertiser attempts to meet you at any other location than their own home. Unscrupulous sellers will often suggest another location to avoid showing the puppyā€™s true living conditions. The advertiser should ALWAYS let you see the puppies interact with their mother. Pets4Homes do not allow third party sale of puppies and all litters of puppies advertised, MUST have been bred by the advertiser. Make sure that the interaction between the puppy and its mother is natural to avoid the setting being staged.

Ask lots of questions

Ask lots of questions

Reputable breeders will be happy to answer any questions you have to help you find the right puppy. Important questions are about health tests and checks, the puppyā€™s parents, and much more.

Listen closely, is the breeder being evasive? If so, they may have something to hide.

Puppies must be 8 weeks when collected

Puppies must be 8 weeks when collected

Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before they can leave their mothers. Please make sure to check the paperwork to ensure the puppy is old enough.

Microchips are a legal requirement

Microchips are a legal requirement

By law, all dogs over 8 weeks must be microchipped. Ask the seller for evidence and how to transfer the microchip details.

For puppies, breeders need to microchip their puppies under their own details first. You should ask for a copy before collection and never accept any excuse for sending them later.

Check the registered address matches where you visited. Puppy farmers will try and explain away why details donā€™t match - walk away.

Know your breeders

Know your breeders

Licensed breeders: Licensing regulations vary across the UK so please check the rules on your local councilā€™s website or where you plan to buy.

Licensed breeders need to pass strict inspections to get their licence. They will be given a star rating from 1 to 5 and undergo periodic re-inspections to ensure they are meeting welfare standards. Pets4Homes checks their licence to give them the green badge on their advert. You can filter by licensed breeders in the search results.

Hobby breeders: These breeders usually have litters every now and then but donā€™t do it often enough to require a licence. Hobby breeders usually focus on one or two breeds and will be just as happy as licensed breeders to provide viewings with the mother and paperwork.

Puppy farmers: These are the ones to avoid! They can be hard to spot but they wonā€™t do everything in this checklist. Look out for people avoiding your questions, trying to hide the pupā€™s mother, not showing an interest in how you will look after the puppy, or pressuring you to make a decision. Keep an eye out for any differences in addresses or personal details on paperwork too.

Health tests

Health tests

Great breeders will health test the parents to look for genetic conditions or potential diseases. Tests include hip scores, elbow scores, inbreeding coefficients, and many more. Different breeds have different tests - see our breed profiles.

Ask what health tests have been done and for paperwork to prove the results.

Breeders who do these tests tend to have healthier pups and will likely charge more as a result of running the tests.

Health check & paperwork

Health check & paperwork

The seller should be willing to let you take the pet to a vet of your choice for a health check and return the pet within 48 hours for a full refund if there are health issues. If the puppy has already been health checked, make sure you have this documented and phone their vet. The vet may not be able to disclose specific health information due to GDPR, however they should confirm the puppies have been checked. When you meet the puppy, they should be sociable and alert, with bright eyes and no visible health issues. Read about how to check the health of a dog here.

If the breeder claims the animal has been vaccinated and/or microchipped, ask to see records of these, including vaccination certificates and evidence of worming and flea treatments. It is required by law that all dogs over 8 weeks of age are microchipped and that the keepers' details registered against them are kept up to date. The breeder is responsible for microchipping the puppies and must have their details registered on the microchip database first. These records should be sent before collection and you should never accept any excuse for sending them later. For puppies, if they are advertised as Kennel Club registered, make sure you get a copy of their Registration Certificate before you buy the puppy.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations

If the breeder says the pet has been vaccinated ask to see vaccination certificates and any paperwork.

Worms and flea treatments

Worms and flea treatments

Ask about the puppyā€™s worms and fleas treatment schedule. Depending on the breederā€™s schedule you may need to do the final treatments yourself.

Pet Payment & contract

Pet Payment & contract

Never pay for a puppy you havenā€™t met - not even a deposit. We suggest you pay through via Pet Payments to get the Pets4Homes Guarantee which protects against fraud and congenital illness and fights puppy farmers.

Deposits are usually considered non-refundable but are refundable with Pet Payments if the breeder is at fault.

If you do decide to pay offline, always know you can walk away at any time and report the seller to us.

We also encourage all new puppy owners to sign a contract with the seller to make sure that what has been agreed is formalised.Ā You can find a specialised puppy contractĀ here.

Trust your gut and walk away

Trust your gut and walk away

If you think a puppy may be the result of irresponsible breeding, do not ā€œrescueā€ the puppy no matter how much you want to. We know itā€™s very hard but walk away andĀ report the sellerĀ to us and your local council immediately. Save yourself the heartbreak and do the right thing.

You can read stories of people who got caught up with puppy farmers here.

Get your dog insured!

Get your dog insured!

You should always get your pet insured as the cost of unexpected vet bills can be very high. Insure as early as possible as companies do not usually cover existing medical conditions. You want to be insured before anything develops.
