Description
Lion (Full name Lion Tolstoy) is a large and incredibly athletic incarnation of a German Shepherd. He has 1/4 Sarloos in his makeup, with timber wolf as a great-grandfather, so is technically also a low-content wolfdog with the extra strength and agility to match.
His character is essentially completely GSD, but his physical abilities are impressive. He is 50KG and 27” at the shoulder, but can jump 5-bar gates and run at a speed that is simply ridiculous for his size! Fortunately he is not clumsy, and the only downside to this is that in play he is capable of flipping over smaller dogs that think they can evade him. Fortunately training has helped him be gentle! He has managed to catch squirrels and wild rabbits, but is good with cats.
Though a formidable guard dog on one hand, clearly keen to protect his family and unafraid to challenge anyone suspicious, he is also very sociable and friendly and has the high intelligence and good nerve to understand situations and not overdo the protection. He loves guests coming to the house, asking for tummy rubs, and is friendly out and about since lots of people want to stroke or cuddle him. It’s aways a good sign when the postman loves your giant guard dog (as was the case in our previous home too!)
His father was an exceptionally intelligent GSD of Spanish origin, while his mother is half KC GSD and half Sarloos as mentioned. Although she has twice as much wolf, she is also incredibly friendly, leaning on the children when we first visited Lion as a puppy, and seeming to encourage them to pick up her babies. She is also one of the most impressive-looking dogs we have ever seen
Aged 4, and in complete prime, we are now ready to breed from him, at a reduced rate for his first mating. We did not want to affect his lively nature by starting no too early! If successful we will then probably move in to scoring him, but given that his late father was fit and able to walk steep hills right up to the age of 13 1/2, and his mothers robust genetics we have no doubts as to his genetic qualifications.
Ideally we would prefer a mate to come to us, but understand if this is difficult.
We are constantly told that he is the most impressive and beautiful German shepherd that people have ever seen, while a horse judge exclaimed that his trot is as graceful as any Lippizaner stallion!
