Reluctantly I am looking to re-home my Hermann tortoise Timmy. He is very special to me as my family got him for me for my 30th birthday. I have always been fascinated by tortoises and he is the most placid and friendliest little thing. So as you can imagine this is not an easy post for me but the right thing to do.
He is no trouble at all, he is currently kept in a varivariam with all the correct lighting/lamp settings. This is only a short term housing as these animals need ideally an outside space as they grow due to their natural habitat it would not be fair to keep him in a vaviriam/ tortoise table. He needs someone who has outdoor space, that can over time as he grows have a purpose build space for him with of course somewhere warm with shelter also due to our British weather, heating still needs to be correct. Hermann tortoises also burrow so it’s very important to have a base in their home.
We do have a house with a garden but as we live in a new build our garden is very small and we cannot give him the best space he needs. We also have a dog which again is absolutely fine when separated Timmy can stretch his legs but this is not as much as we would like and again is unfair to our Timmy.
Tortoises are beautiful creatures and I just want him to be re-homed to the right person with the correct knowledge. He is not old at all, he was hatched in September 2021 and can live between 70-100 years if not longer, tortoises are quite difficult to determine their gender until very mature which can take years due to their life span and some are never determined but it is believed that the longer the tail and if it curves it is a male. As Timmy has got older this is what has happened so we have always believed him to be a boy but this could be wrong.
