Description

These adorable gerbils were the result of oopsie litters. I bought a trio of ladies from that turned out to have been incorrectly sexed and ended up with 2 pregnant females and a male. They have been loved and treasured and I will only let them go to families that can provide suitable homes. Getting ready to home a gerbil can take some time and preparation, so I am listing them early to allow time to get everything ready. These pups have been well handled on a daily basis as soon as they were old enough and so should be confident to be held. Unfortunately pet shops don’t always give the best advice about their needs, so I strongly recommend joining all/any of the gerbil forums on Facebook to research their needs before deciding if they are a fit for your family. These forums provide useful inspiration for cage set-ups: https://www.facebook.com/groups/531719538715245 Go through their featured tab to learn everything you will need to buy and everything to avoid. You will save yourself a lot of time and money! https://www.facebook.com/groups/701200276736538 https://www.facebook.com/groups/40820477093 I would prefer to rehome them as pairs. Gerbils are social animals and need a friend so I won’t sell solo. Trios can sometimes be more unstable in the long term as they are more prone to declanning when in larger groups. If you are new to gerbils a pair is always the best option. The best cage options are glass aquariums with lids and the minimum size for a pair is 100cm by 40cm by 40cm. Hamster cages with a plastic tray and barred lids are not suitable at all. Gerbils need deep bedding, 25cm deep to be able to burrow as they would in the wild. Although it is OK to keeping the bedding lower while they get used to you, long term the depth is essential to their wellbeing. Good options are the Bucatstate 2.0 or 3.0 (check out Amazon and Temu). Avoid the Bucatstate 1.0 which is too small at 80cm. If you’re on a budget Facebook marketplace is worth a look as aquariums often pop up. Of course you will need to make a suitable lid if you go for this option. Adequate ventilation is crucial so mesh lids are perfect. If you’re not good at DIY there are companies that can make them for you. Kirsty’s tank tops on Facebook makes custom sizes. https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=kirsty%27s%20tank%20tops Some of the treats and toys sold at Pets At Home are not suitable for gerbils. Please avoid anything with string as they can ingest the fibres when they chew it and it can prove to be fatal. They can have wooden toys, but not the brightly coloured carrots and bridges made out of compacted sawdust. They need a mix of bedding types anlong with hay in order to construct their tunnels. They shouldn’t have pine wood shavings due to the phenols in the wood. All these topics are covered in the “featured” tab on the first Facebook group page I listed above Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to reserve any of our pups. Many thanks, Claire
