Description
Jaxon is a loving friendly boy with people, ok with kids but not been around them much, occasional visits from baby/toddler grand children. He's kept on lead when they visit due to his size vs theirs but after initial excitement he settles down no problem. He loves fuss, strokes, cuddles and will happily settle on his bed in the evenings.
Primary reason for needing to re home is the safety of our other dog who Jaxon has now become reactive towards. We have tried 3 trainers and 2 behaviourists over the past 12 months to try to help us but the consensus of opinion is that they simply don't like each other and our little dog is at serious risk. The situation between them has deteriorated, there is now fights most days, we have to feed one upstairs and one downstairs then keep apart. If they are both downstairs we have to have leads on. Fortunately, we've avoided any injuries so far because I'm acutely aware of body language and they're on leads but our house isn't big and their fights are becoming more frequent in amount and intensity.
He became reactive to other dogs outside the home after 2 incidents with off lead dogs during his 2nd adolescent fear period, he wasnt bitten, hubby kept them away from him but was terrified & shaking. We allowed decompression for several days but within a week it happened again with different set of dogs and though again not hurt he reacted very aggressively and has got worse since then. Walks well on halti head collar with his dad. No reactivity to people, vehicles, bikes, pushchairs etc. Very reactive if he sees another dog. He is crate trained and will settle overnight or if we need to go out. Can do the basics of sit, down, wait, roll over, leave, drop, heel, stop, go sniff, look at me, go find, crate, bed etc.
He will need to be an only dog with someone able to spend a lot of time with him and experience with GSD'S will be a must. He needs strong leadership but will be a great dog in the right hands and environment. We will continue to 'manage' him as safely as possible at home until the right home can be found but that needs to be ASAP because my little dog is at risk.
No known medical problems, still entire. MRI, spinal tap and xrays were done because he's VERY cow hocked but nothing is clinically wrong, it's just poor confirmation. Had 6 months of hydrotherapy to build muscle strength, some improvement but still very cow hocked. Trialled pain relief incase that was an issue but ceased after 2 weeks and no difference was observed.
Jaxon was much wanted and very loved, we have literally spent thousands of pounds on his care, training and puppy proofing our outside areas. However, we've finally come to the conclusion that for some reason (and not for want of trying) we are failing this dog and are unable to give him what he needs. The aggression towards our 7 year old small dog was the jolt we needed to accept he needs to be re homed to someone who can do better by him. I am devastated to have come to this decision but it's for the best all round.
Jaxon loves to play football, kick the ball for him and he'll get it and 'throw' it back for you to do it again. He loves to play with a flirt pole, a bouncy ball and chase an empty squash bottle! He does also like anything that has a squeaker and makes it his mission to kill the squeaker so for this reason he's only allowed to play with anything squeaky with us, if left to his own devices he will rip toys apart to get to the squeaker. He also likes to play 'find it' with a ball or treats. He only has hard rubber toys left out that he can't destroy. His 'job' is to shred all boxes that amazon deliveries come in, ready for recycling. He loves the snow and ice, especially crunching it up! He loves his swimming pool in spring and summer too.
Jaxon is mainly fed raw completes of 80/10/10. He also has high protein extruded or cold pressed biscuits/kibble that is grain free and wheat free as a top up if he asks for it or shows us he's hungry, we sometimes also use it for training, play and motivation. Majority of his treats are natural things, turkey necks, chicken feet, cow ears, ostrich bones etc. For training he has little pieces of cocktail sausage or home made liver cake. Jaxon will sometimes refuse food or ask for it later if he doesn't want it, he self regulates his appetite and will only eat if he's hungry, the amount will vary too depending on his energy output.
