About Yogi
Yogi is a stunning, sweet-natured, two year old shepherd cross who was born in Cyprus and found himself in a shelter when he was hardly four months old. He has been with his adoptive family since he was nine months old, living in a loving home in Scotland, but unfortunately the household dynamic has shifted since the arrival of a new resident dog and his family feel that Yogi needs more than they can offer him.
Yogi is a big dog, in every sense. He’s big in size, he has a big heart, and he has a big personality. Because he’s a large sized dog, it’s really important that he finds an experienced home with a confident adopter who can give him the training, understanding and boundaries that he requires. Being a Shepherd mix, Yogi is a very intelligent, energetic and trainable dog with a lot of potential if worked with in the right way. He’d be a fantastic companion for someone looking for a working type dog to train. At home Yogi thrives in a structured environment. He is crate trained and finds comfort in routine and predictability.
Yogi has a charming personality and especially with his family who he loves and trusts, he is very affectionate and adores attention. He loves giving kisses and is always down for a belly rub! He’s attentive, very food motivated, keen to please and eager to learn. He has picked up basic command training with ease, but would definitely benefit from more challenging activities, such as scentwork and mantrailing. These types of activity keep a dog’s brain active and engaged, and as they’re cooperative sports they help build more of a bond with their handler too.
Yogi enjoys his walks and loves being outdoors. He’s an adventurous, curious dog and enjoys exploring his surroundings. He does have a prey drive, so where he’s let off lead needs to be selected responsibly, but he likes being out and about. He can be strong on the lead so requires an able-bodied adopter that is comfortable with bigger dogs.
Despite the dynamic between Yogi and the new resident dog not being good, with other dogs he is generally friendly and sociable. He has previously spent time at daycare with many other dogs and done really well, and he has always got on nicely with the resident female dog at home too. He is a protective and loyal dog, and needs a bit of help to understand where he fits in the social status.
Yogi’s perfect home would be based semi-rurally with a spacious, secure garden where he can explore, run and play. His size means that he’s far better suited to a home with older children, or an adult only household. He loves kids but his size and enthusiasm would be overwhelming to little ones! Previous dog experience and understanding is necessary in order for Yogi to really flourish and reach his full potential, and he will feel more secure as well knowing his handler is confident and in control.
While he’s been friendly with other dogs, we think at this point Yogi would do best in a home where he’s the only dog and can have someone’s undivided attention. He is also seeking an active home with plenty of mental and physical stimulation, opportunities to explore, learn and play. He’s a loyal and loving companion who will repay your time and attention tenfold with his boundless affection and zest for life. We’re determined to find Yogi a home where his needs are fully met and his wonderful qualities can truly shine.
Yogi is currently based in Angus, Scotland and has a clean bill of health. He’s had a recent behavioural assessment and is ready to find his new family as soon as possible.
