The Basset Bleu de Gascogne, also known as Blue Gascony Basset, Bleus de Gascogne, is a dog native to France and the breed has only recently been introduced to the UK. As a result, these beautiful dogs are one of the lesser known French dogs here in the UK. They were first bred in the Gascony region of France, hence their name. They are charming dogs, and although they were originally bred to work, they make wonderfully loyal and affectionate companions and family dogs. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne was only recognised as a distinct breed by the Kennel Club in the 1990s, and although they are still very popular in France, they are not as sought after in this country. So if you want to share a home with one Basset Bleu, you need to register your interest with a breeder and get on a waiting list, as only a few purebred puppies are bred each year.
